Automatic control systems are found ubiquitously in today’s automobiles. This dissertation focuses on the development of control systems for autonomous vehicle applications using model-based control design approaches. We start with the control system development for chassis actuators. Firstly, we develop a closed loop torque overlay control system to improve the steering feel of an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system. This system has a reference model, a rack force estimator, and a tracking controller. A target steering feel is generated from a reference model with an rack force estimate to reflect the actual vehicle operating conditions.
