Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, collectively referred to as ‘macroglia’, are ubiquitous cells in the central nervous system that perform essential tissue functions, including buffering potassium, providing metabolic support to neurons, and ensheathing axons to enable rapid saltatory conduction.
