The LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN in the Fram Strait between NE Greenland and Svalbard is influenced by processes in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ). Since 1999, an annual multidisciplinary sampling program is carried out at 21 stations, following a depth transect from 250m off the Kongsfjorden to over 5500m in the Molloy Deep, the deepest depression in the Arctic Ocean. As part of the time series, virtually undisturbed sediment samples are taken with a multiple corer for the analysis of various biogenic compounds and the inhabiting meiofauna.
