‘Machines’ et ‘miroirs’. La Mettrie critique de Leibniz

La Mettrie makes reference to Leibniz from the very beginning of his philosophical production, devoting considerable attention to him already in the Natural History of the Soul, and until the end of his life. He does not precisely identify his philosophical sources, but it would not be impossible – quite the contrary – that his knowledge of Leibniz’s thought was based on the Principles of Nature and Grace and on the Monadology. Over and over, La Mettrie insists that there are only two philosophical systems, and two ways of doing philosophy: that of the materialists and that of the spiritualists. He devotes his life to defending the first, Leibniz personifying the second. Like Leibniz, indeed, La Mettrie compares the art of nature and the art of man, natural machines and artificial machines.
