After two centuries of regulated monopoly, the undertaker's sector in France opened up to competition in 1993 (Sueur law). On the basis of a several years ethnographic inquiry on the funeral business, this research combined a socio-economic approach of re-compositions over the present period with analysis of the social and political history of this market. This book contributes to the contemporary economic sociology renewal. It describes the market organization through the analysis of competitive dynamics, service relation, market policy based on the relations between the State and the firms. In the background, ones discover the specific historical path of the French funeral market regarding the international movements. The analysis suggests the interest to closely combine and articulate political sciences and economic sociology approaches.Depuis 1993 (loi Sueur), le secteur des pompes funèbres en France est entré dans la sphère du marché concurrentiel, après deux siècles de monopole réglementé. A partir d'une enquête ethnographique de plusieurs années dans le milieu des pompes funèbres, cet ouvrage propose de partir à la rencontre de ce marché spécifique, pour en retracer l'histoire et analyser l'organisation des échanges économiques.
