The results of the general election in the Czech Republic, which took place on 8th and 9th October 2021, have shaken the Czech political establishment. The currently ruling populist oligarch Andrej Babiš lost the election and two right of centre coalitions are the winners. However, since the Pirate Party, the most liberal member of the five participants in the two coalitions, has flopped, is there a danger that Czech politics will revert to the right wing fundamentalism of the 1990s, which will cause populism and extremism to come back with a vengeance?
