Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is well known that type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is an important risk factor for CAD, and that it can produce an asymptomatic form of the disease or one with atypical manifestations. The association between DM2 and coronary atherogenesis is such that CAD has been reported in up to 91% of asymptomatic diabetic patients, a higher prevalence than that of non-diabetic controls. In this narrative review we summarize the main epidemiologic, prognostic and determinant factors of asymptomatic CAD in DM2.
