Comércio e contrabando entre o Pará, o Contestado Franco-Brasileiro e a Guiana Francesa na década de 1870

Since the end of the 17th century, Portugal and then Brazil disputed with France what would be the limit of their possessions in northern South America, in a region corresponding to about half of the current state of Amapá. In 1841, Brazilian and French authorities agreed that neither country would have governance over the so-called Franco-Brazilian Contest. As a result, that area became a haven for various communities of fugitives, maroons and villages that managed themselves autonomously. Thus, this article analyzes the commercial exchanges established between the inhabitants of the province of Pará, the contested area and the French Guiana, investigating their strategies to circumvent the inspection of the Brazilian authorities, and their attempts to contain or at least control the circulation and trade networks by along the Atlantic coast in the northern Amazon.Desde o final do século XVII, Portugal e depois o Brasil disputaram com a França qual seria o limite das suas possessões no norte da América do Sul, numa região correspondente à cerca da metade do atual estado do Amapá. Em 1841, autoridades brasileiras e francesas acordaram que nenhum dos dois países teria governança sobre o chamado Contestado Franco-Brasileiro. Como resultado, aquela área se tornou abrigo para diversas comunidades de fugitivos, quilombolas e vilas que se administravam autonomamente. Assim, este artigo analisa as trocas comerciais estabelecidas entre os habitantes da província do Pará, Contestado e Guiana Francesa, investigando suas estratégias para burlar a fiscalização das autoridades brasileiras, e as tentativas destas visando conter ou ao menos controlar as redes de circulação e comércio ao longo da costa atlântica na Amazônia setentrional
