A broca do café, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) é praga-chave em cultivos de café (Coffea spp.: Rubiaceae). As fêmeas constroem galerias no mesocarpo e endocarpo e põem ovos na semente, aonde as larvas se alimentam reduzindo o peso dos grãos e sua qualidade. Esse comportamento alimentar endofítico dificulta a exposição dos indivíduos a inseticidas eventualmente pulverizados para proteger contra o broqueamento do grão pela broca do café. Além disso, é necessário a busca por eficazes substitutos ao banido endosulfan, que nos últimos 30- 40 anos havia sido o único inseticida utilizado no controle da broca do café.
