Garis pantai Indonesia membentang hingga 99.093 km dan gelombang lautnya memiliki potensi 1.200 MW. Pulau Nusa Penida adalah salah satu lokasi yang memiliki energi tersebut. Namun, sebagai pusat pariwisata yang berkembang, pulau ini membutuhkan sumber listrik alternatif. Oleh karena itu pulau ini diteliti untuk menentukan potensi energi gelombang dan lokasi pemasangan perangkat konverter yang tepat. Khususnya, penelitian ini mempelajari potensi di bagian selatan pulau karena daerah ini sesuai dengan kriteria perangkat konverter; dengan kedalaman 10-20 m dalam jarak 300 m dari pantai.
