Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating condition associated with deficits across cognitive domains (e.g., speed of processing, attention, memory), including executive functions (EFs)—a set of higher-order cognitive processes necessary for goal-directed behavior. Deficits in EFs have a deleterious effect on functioning and hold proximal links with maladaptive emotional regulation strategies and depressive symptomatology. Importantly, such deficits often persist following remission, even when antidepressant medication treatment or psychotherapy has been provided.
