Winter-runoff from airports contains a high fraction of contaminated stormwater. Contaminants such as de-icing chemicals propylene glycol and potassium formate, heavy metals and PAHs are often present in stormwater runoff from airports and contribute to pollution of groundwater and surface water. Installing granular filters along the runway, can be seen as an alternative solution to remove contaminants by means of physical processes such as filtration, adsorption and by biodegradation. As a part of the project Klima 2050, the hydraulic performance of five different filter media, consisting of fine, coarse and mixed Filtralite materials provided by Weber Saint-Gobain and activated carbon, was tested for treatment of stormwater.
