In this master thesis I discuss the use of space in Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia and Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, where the notions of history and past gain a new emphasis, and are seen as intrinsically connected to setting and space. It has been argued by theorists such as Sten Moslund, that after the ‘migrant turn’ within postcolonial studies, there has been a tendency to read migration literature within a celebrative hybridity discourse, which is criticised for discussing the Third Space, and the creative hybrid condition in a celebratory light as a state one can reach, instead of seeing it as a never-ending process of hybridisation affected by ambivalent and contradictive forces.
