The thesis "The Sacred Berg" addresses the functions of the place name Berg in Norway during the Iron age. This study is based on the hypothesis that places with the name Berg were considered sacred, and that this can be mirrored through archaeological traces of cultic activity during the Iron Age. It addresses cult continuity based on archaeological traces of cultic function in areas where early medieval churches have been erected. Based on previous research in archaeology and name-examination the dissertation has an interdisciplinary perspective. The study also addresses the place name Berg's nearby cosmological landscape.
