Runoff from urban areas carries a wide range of pollutants both particle-bound and dissolved. Dissolved pollutants are generally more mobile and bioavailable as well as more difficult to remove by conventional infiltration based systems. Three adsorbent amended filters were studied for suitability in filtering swales for stormwater runoff management in cold climates, with special attention to the capture of dissolved metals. These alternative filters were composed of clean homogeneous sand and one adsorbent.
