The western section of the Ostia decumanus offers a landscape that is deeply marked by the reshaping and restoration work carried out following the excavations conducted by Guido Calza between 1938 and 1942, so much so that the scenography set up at that time conceals from the layman's eye the complexity of the urban evolution of this area. Only the didactic area at the foot of the Domus sul decumano (III, II, 3) still bears witness to the complexity of the evolution of the western districts of Ostia. This survey shows unambiguously that this area underwent several major urban phases from its creation during the Republican period to its abandonment at the end of Antiquity.
