AS ENCHENTES E A URBANIZAÇÃO DO RIO PARAIBUNA – MG

The rivers, since the pre-history, has structured spatial development of cities but also has bechanged by human civilization. In this sense, the Paraibuna River, one of the main tributariesof Paraíba do Sul River Watershed in Minas Gerais, is not an exception of this rule, being thescene of recurrent floods. This fact affects the population, because of the material andimmaterial damages related to the flooding. Thus, the mapping of river plains appears as a firstimportance tool for the understanding of floods and the mitigating of its social and economicconsequences, once that the plain just exists because of the successive flood events along thetime. Then, this study aimed to study was to analyze and interpret the relationship between thehistory and frequency of flood events in the urban area of the city of Juiz de Fora in the late19th and early 20th century, highlighting the permanent risk of irregular occupation in the banksof the Paraibuna River.Os rios, desde a pré-história, estruturam o processo de desenvolvimento espacial das cidades,sendo simultaneamente alterados por elas. Nesse sentido, o rio Paraibuna, um dos principaistributários da bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul, não foge a esta regra, sendo palco de recorrentesenchentes. Este fato acomete à população prejuízos materiais e imateriais, diante disso, osestudos dos eventos de enchentes configuram-se como um artefato de primeira importância paraa compreensão das enchentes e a mitigação de suas consequências econômicas e sociais, umavez que as planícies só existem devido a sucessivos eventos de inundação ao longo do tempo.Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar e interpretar a relação entre o histórico e afrequência de eventos de inundação na área urbana da cidade de Juiz de Fora no final do séculoXIX e início do século XX, destacando o risco permanente da ocupação irregular nas margensdo rio Paraibuna
