The aim of the paper is to examine the feasibility of a hybridized fuel cell hydrogen shunting locomotive. To gain an overview about the common daily usage, a survey among operators was made. Based on that the outcomes of the survey, generic building blocks were defined. The energy demand for the different blocks were calculated by using a reference vehicle. Based on the energy split, the fuel cell and the battery were dimensioned and arranged into the reference vehicle. Additionally, the hydrogen demand was calculated and the required hydrogen tanks were conceptually packaged
