According to data from the US Census Bureau, women comprise almost exactly half (50.8%) of the population of the United States (US Census Bureau, 2018). However, within the law enforcement profession, women represent only 13% of all police officers (Reaves, 2015). The large disparity in gender representation in the law enforcement profession has been a reality for at least the past four decades, and much research has been conducted in an attempt to identify barriers to women entering into and promoting within the profession.
