A review of the literature has been carried out to identify what is known in relation to heat transfer mechanisms, thermo-fluid dynamic behavior, solidification characteristics, factors that influence the origin of defects in steel and the use of strategies that impact on a reduction of the defects that originate, mainly, in the mold of the continuous casting of steel. The methodology consisted of collecting and synthesizing fragmented knowledge, comparing the information found in different sources, and giving a clear and up-to-date answer on the thermo-fluid dynamic behavior of the steel in the casting mold.
