ESTRATIFICACIÓN VERTICAL DE LAS ABEJAS DE LAS ORQUÍDEAS (EUGLOSSINAE) EN UN BOSQUE TROPICAL HÚMEDO, MONTE FRESCO, CERRO AZUL, PANAMÁ

We made observations on the vertical distribution of euglosinas orchid bees in a tropical rainforest, Monte Fresco, Cerro Azul, Panama province, Panamá. Three strata were considered: understory (up to 1.5 m), canopy (20-25 m) and mid-canopy (between the canopy and understory (10-15 m). A total of 963 males belonging to 22 species in the genera Eufriesea, Euglossa, and Eulaema were captured using McPhail eucalyptus oil traps. Euglossa imperialis, Euglossa variabilis and Euglossa tridentata were the most abundant species and were captured in all canopy-strata. Significant differences in the diversity and abundance of bees among the different canopy strata of the forest were found; the canopy showed the greatest diversity and abundance. Stratification of vegetation in the tropical humid forests of Monte Fresco creates differential environmental conditions at each stratum that determine the distribution of orchid bees, such that some species can be found with maximum frequency in the forest.  Se realizaron observaciones sobre la distribución vertical de abejas euglosinas en un bosque tropical húmedo, Monte Fresco, Cerro Azul, Panamá, Panamá. Los estratos evaluados fueron: sotobosque (1.5 m), el dosel (20-25 m) la parte media entre el dosel y sotobosque (10-15 m). Un total de 963 machos pertenecientes a 22 especies ubicados en los géneros Eufriesea, Euglossa y Eulaema fueron capturados usando aceite de eucalipto en trampas McPhail. Euglossa imperialis, Euglossa variabilis y Euglossa tridentata fueron las especies más abundantes y se capturaron en todos los estratos. Se encontró diferencias significativas en la diversidad y la abundancia de abejas en los diferentes estratos del bosque; en donde el dosel mostró la mayor diversidad y abundancia. La estratificación de la vegetación en el bosques tropical húmedo de Monte Fresco crea condiciones ambientales particulares que determinan la distribución de las abejas de las orquídeas, de tal forma que algunas especies pueden encontrarse con mayor frecuencia en el dosel del bosque
