INVENTARIO ICTIOLÓGICO EN LA CUENCA DEL RÍO BALSAS, PARQUE NACIONAL DARIÉN, PANAMÁ

The first ichthyologic inventory was carried out at the Balsas river middle basin within Darien National Park, Republic of Panama in order to determine the freshwater fish population composition and distribution. To accomplish this, intensive collections were done with the aid of fishing, dip and cast nets at 12 stations and nine riverine systems during September-October 1997. A total of 511 freshwater fish individuals belonging to 40 species, 38 genera and 17 families were collected or observed. The 79 % of total fish captured belonged to the primary fishes (including 12 characins and seven armored catfishes) totaling 405 individuals. Nine secondary fishes were found, mainly cichlids and guppies, as well as four peripheral fishes. Most abundant and representative species collected where Roeboides occidentalis, Astyanax fasciatus, Aequidens coeruleopunctatus, Gephyrocharax atracaudatus and Creagutus affinis. A total of 11 freshwater fish were considered as endemic species where found at the study area, including Brycon argenteus, Gephyrocharax atracaudatus, Hemibrycon dariensis, Pseudocheirodon arnoldi, Lasiancistrus planiceps, Rineloricaria altipinnis, Sturisomatichthys citurensis, Amphilophus calobrensis, Geophagus crassilabris, Vieja tuyrensis and Rivulus chucunaque. Thirty-eight species were recorded for the first time at the Balsas river basin, including the confirmation of the presence of Pseudophallus starksii.        Se presenta el primer inventario ictiológico realizado en la cuenca media del río Balsas dentro del Parque Nacional Darién, República de Panamá con el objetivo de determinar la composición y distribución de las poblaciones de peces de agua dulce. Para ello se hicieron colectas intensivas con la ayuda de chinchorros, redes de mano y atarraya en un total de 12 estaciones y nueve sistemas ribereños durante septiembre-octubre de 1997. Se colectaron un total de 511 individuos pertenecientes a 40 especies, 38 géneros y 17 familias de peces de agua dulce. El 79 % del total de peces colectados lo constituyeron los peces primarios (incluyendo 12 sardinas de río y siete chupapiedras) con un total de 405 individuos. Se encontraron nueve especies de peces secundarios, principalmente mojarras y parivivos, así como cuatro especies de peces periferales. Las especies más abundantes y representativas colectadas fueron Roeboides occidentalis, Astyanax fasciatus, Aequidens coeruleopunctatus, Gephyrocharax atracaudatus y Creagutus affinis. Se encontraron 11 especies de peces de agua dulce consideradas como endémicas en el área de estudio, las cuales incluyen a Brycon argenteus, Gephyrocharax atracaudatus, Hemibrycon dariensis, Pseudocheirodon arnoldi, Lasiancistrus planiceps, Rineloricaria altipinnis, Sturisomatichthys citurensis, Amphilophus calobrensis, Geophagus crassilabris, Vieja tuyrensis y Rivulus chucunaque. Se adicionan 38 nuevos registros en la cuenca del río Balsas, así como de la confirmación de la presencia de Pseudophallus starksii.       &nbsp
