EL QUINTO ESTADO: EL CONDENSADO DE BOSE-EINSTEIN (BEC)

    In 1995, after many failures attempts and after overcoming several obstacles, it was possible cool down a gas of alkali atoms at temperature on the order of 10-7 K. For this temperature the atoms bond together to form the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). The BEC is another state of matter and its properties are being studied today. The BEC was predicted by Einstein (1924) when he analyzed the work of N.S. Bose (about statistical mechanics) but it had to wait for the development and improvement of the techniques to cool and trap atoms, in 1980’s y 90’s. In this work, we’ll review those some of these techniques and other elements for BEC formation. In recognition of their work, at 2001, E. Cornell (USA), C. Weimann (USA) & W. Ketterle (Germany) were awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of BEC; the fifth state of matter.      En 1995, tras muchos intentos fallidos y superar varios obstáculos, se logró enfriar un gas de átomos alcalinos a temperaturas del orden de 10-7 K. A esta temperatura, los átomos se “unen” para formar el Condensado de Bose-Einstein (BEC). El BEC constituye otro estado de la materia, cuyas propiedades son objeto de estudios hoy día. El BEC había sido predicho por Einstein (1924) cuando analizaba el trabajo de S.N. Bose (sobre Mecánica Estadística), pero tuvo que esperar el desarrollo y perfeccionamiento de técnicas para atrapar y enfriar átomos, de las últimas dos décadas. En este trabajo, se repasan los aspectos más importantes de algunas de éstas técnicas y otros elementos de la formación del BEC. En el año 2001, y en reconocimiento a su trabajo, E. Cornell (EUA), C. Weimann (EUA) & W. Ketterle (Alemania), fueron galardonados con el premio Nóbel de Física, por el descubrimiento del quinto estado de la materia. &nbsp
