Learner autonomy in foreign language learning has become an important focus for research in the context of educational practice over the last 30 years and it still continues promoting studies on different aspects connected to it, such as student’s readiness for autonomy, the development of learning strategies to implement autonomy, student’s improvement in motivation through autonomy, and so on.In the first part, this paper aims at defining what learner autonomy is, considering the contributions of the major experts’ to the filed. In the second part, it tries to take a step forward proposing a future direction for research, that is investigating the role of learner autonomy in multilingual learning
