The aim of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem between experience of sexual abuse and the development of self-injurious behaviour, the difference between boys and girls was also examined. Previous studies have shown that sexual abuse is rather frequent in modern society and can have long-term health consequences for both boys and girls. According to studies, childhood sexual abuse has been linked to the development of self-injurious behaviour and low self-esteem in adulthood.
