Verkefnið er lokað til 01.06.2022.Basaltic lava tubes are considered extreme environments due to their subsurface location, scarcity of nutrients and absence of light. Amidst the harsh environment, microorganisms can find shelter from environmental factors such as temperature shifts, climate changes, UV radiation and ecological competition, as the environment is more suitable for primary producers during its primary habitant stage. These factors make pristine lava tubes an exceptional study sites, which can serve as equivalent ecosystems on other planets and moons, therefore suitable for exploring microorganisms and biosignatures for the benefit of future studies of possible life on Mars. The compatibility in lithology between Earth and Mar...
