This March 6, 1928 image shows the construction of Sylva Paperboard Company's stock tanks and basement looking southeast. The Sylva Paperboard Company, a subsidiary of the Mead Corporation, was organized in 1928 and a new plant was built across the tracks from the existing tannery and extract plant. Ernest Lyndon McKee (1871-1952) persuaded Mead to take advantage of a new process using chestnut chip by-product and turning it into paper for cardboard boxes. Already the head of the tannery and extract plant, McKee became vice president and manager of the newly built paper mill
