Construction of Sylva Paperboard Company's stock tanks and basement

This March 6, 1928 image shows the construction of Sylva Paperboard Company's stock tanks and basement looking southeast. The Sylva Paperboard Company, a subsidiary of the Mead Corporation, was organized in 1928 and a new plant was built across the tracks from the existing tannery and extract plant. Ernest Lyndon McKee (1871-1952) persuaded Mead to take advantage of a new process using chestnut chip by-product and turning it into paper for cardboard boxes.
