International audienceThe Pech-de-I'Azé I skull and mandible are some of the few well preserved juvenile Neandertal remains in Europe. Unfortunately the stratigraphie position and dating of the Pech de l'hé I child has never been clear. The fossil was excavated by Peyrony and Capitan at the beginning of this century and attributed by them to the Mousterian of Acheulian Tradition (MTA). This interpretation was contested in 1972 by Bordes who excavated the site in the 1950's and again in the 1970's. The recent discovery of two unpublished letters by Peyrony and Capitan and the study of Bordes' 1970 excavation notes have allowed us to show that the fossil came from layers 6 or 7, defined by Bordes as MTA Qpe B.
