Tumor growth and progression are complex processes mediated by mutual interactions between cancer cells and their surrounding stroma that include diverse cell types and acellular components, which form the tumor microenvironment. In this environment, direct intercellular communications play important roles in the regulation of the biological behaviors of tumors.
