Predictability of Joint Promotion Examinations in SS2 on Academic Performance of Students in Senior School Certificate Examinations: Implications for Counseling

This research studied the predictability of joint SS2 promotion examinations of all the command secondary schools in Nigeria on academic performance of students in Senior School Certificate Examinations. The sample consists of 120 students selected at the Command Secondary School, Abakaliki and Command Day Secondary School, Enugu through systematic sampling technique out of a population of 692 students. Using spearman’s correlation coefficient and mean statistics, it was observed that a positive relationship exists between the performances of students in Joint Promotion Examinations and West African Senior School Certificate Examination. However, the predictability of male students’ results in WASSCE based on JPE results is higher than that of female students. School Counselors are by this discovery expected to assist SS2 students in particular to develop appropriate study behaviours to enable them excel in their studies and examinations. Joint Promotion Examination as a screening test to select credible students for public examinations in SS3 should be introduced in all the secondary schools in Nigeria
