The development of multicultural education in South Africa from a sociopolitical perspective

The purpose of this article is to report on a self study conducted to explore the socio-political context of multicultural education from a South African perspective. In the article, the concept multicultural education is clarified by looking at various definitions of multicultural education that have been espoused by scholars, researchers and organisations in the last thirty (30) years. Having analysed the definitions of multicultural education, the author identified various tenets to capture unified characteristics of multicultural education. In referring to the South African education system, certain goals and principles were identified. The most important goal of education as pointed out through a literature study is to see to it that every student achieve his/her potential. In order for the teacher to achieve this goal, the selection of subject matter content should be based on the principle of inclusivity which incorporates diversity and unity within and across groups. Pedagogy should incorporate opposing opinions and divergent interpretations. Recommendations were suggested to implement multi-cultural education in a typical South African classroom.O objectivo deste artigo é informar sobre um auto estudo produzido para explorar o contexto socio-político da educação multicultural na perspectiva sul-africana. No artigo o conceito de educação multicultural é clarificado olhando a várias definições de educação multicultural que foram expostas por académicos, investigadores, e organizações nos últimos 30 anos. Tendo analisado as definições de educação multicultural o autor identificou vários tentativas de conseguir uma característica uniforme de educação multicultural. Referindo-se ao sistema de educação sul-africano, certos objectivos e princípios foram identificados. O mais importante objectivo de educação conforme evidenciado pela literatura é ver que cada estudante consegue/atinge o seu potencial. Para que o professor possa atingir este objectivo, a escolha dos conectados das matérias deve ser baseada na inclusão que incorpora diversidade e unidade dentro dos grupos e em todos eles. Pedagogia deve incorporar opiniões contrárias e interpretações divergentes. Recomendações foram sugeridas para se implementar educação multicultural em salas de aulas tipicamente sul-africanas.&#160
