Periapical dental radiograph use at different stages of endodontic treatment: A survey among dentists in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria

A thorough knowledge of tooth morphology, careful interpretation of angled radiographs, proper access preparation and a detailed exploration of the interior of the tooth are essential prerequisites for a successful root canal treatment outcome. An assessment of the knowledge of the appropriate use of radiographs during endodontic treatment among a population of Nigerian dentists by means of a cross-sectional study was carried out. Data collected were demographic characteristics (age, gender, status and years in practice), frequency of undertaking root canal, stages at which endodontic radiographs are taken and the timing of radiographic follow-up of endodontic cases. A total of 109 dentists participated in this study, there was a slight male preponderance. Majority (52.3%) stated that an average of 4 radiographs were necessary to be taken in the course of endodontic treatment. With regards to the stage of root canal treatment at which radiographic images should be taken, 97.2% of the respondents stated the pre-operative stage while a slightly higher percentage of them (98.2%) also indicated the working length determination stage as well. More than half (56.6%) of the respondents claimed to follow-up their patients radiographically after endodontic treatment. Those who claimed not to follow up the patients after endodontic treatment cited poor patient motivation as the major reason while 37.0% opined it put an unnecessary extra cost burden on the patient. Their awareness on the need to have radiographic evaluation and guidance during the course of endodontic treatment highlights the importance of radiographs during endodontic treatment.
