Medical Students' Perception of Problem Areas in Anatomy

To determine perceived problem areas in anatomy, determine possible reasons for these problems and propose solutions to the identified areas. Open ended questionnaires were administered to undergraduate medical students of Delta State University, Abraka after obtaining consent from each respondent. The questionnaire included bio-data of students, problem areas, reasons for problems and possible solutions. Permission for the study was obtained from the Departmental ethics committee. The ranges of problems were extensive; neuro-anatomy in gross anatomy, slide review in histology, and cardiovascular embryology were amongst the most highlighted areas of concern. Most students attributed the problems in gross anatomy to difficulty with accessing the area during dissection and inability to grasp the concept. Another majority felt the regions were not well taught or sometimes never taught at all. Some respondents felt there was insufficient time to prepare while 34% opined that gross anatomy topics were voluminous and detailed. Increased lecture time and more practical sessions were possible solutions recommended by students to tackle these problems. Students were observed to have several areas of difficulty when been taught anatomy which is an essential part of basic medical sciences. Problem based lecture technique, improved/modern visual aids and extensive tutorials may perhaps improve students understanding of this subject.Keywords; Anatomy; Education; Problems; Students
