Effects of Guidance Techniques and Initial/Entry Career Maturity Behaviour on Self-Appraisal of Secondary School Adolescents

This study investigated the effect of three guidance techniques and initial/entry career maturity behaviour on self-appraisal of secondary school adolescents. 2S6 students constituted the sample size. They were exposed to treatments in four fixed levels. Three of the subject groups were exposed to career intervention strategies, while the fourth group was exposed to a non-specific treatment (drug abuse). The design is a 4 x 2 factorial with fixed effect consisting of initial/entry career behaviour (high & low) and treatment/control groups. Data d erived from the post treatment were subjected to 2-way analysis of variance. The results of the study show that despite entry career maturity level, the main effect of treatment on students\' competence in self-appraisal was significant. Career week was the most effective for fostering competence in self-appraisal, followed by career games and bibliotherapy. Based on the findings of this study, career week was recommended as the most suitable of these three techniques for fostering self-appraisal in Nigerian schools environment and that initial/entry career maturity behaviour must not be ignored during career intervention strategies.Nigerian Journal of Guidance and Counselling Vol. 6 (1&2) 1998: pp. 105-11
