One of the most popular traditions in Africa is the telling of stories (narratives), commonly referred to as folktales. The most popular belief among Africans is that these stories, beyond their entertainment value, are also didactic instruments in the society. Though this paper does not contest the positive function of folktales in the society, it takes a critical look at certain aspects of the negative contribution of folk stories to our contemporary socio-political realities.
