The cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) powdery mildew disease epidemic in Kenya

The cashew powdery mildew disease caused by Oidium anacardii Noack is identified as a major cause of low cashew nut production in Kenya. The disease either singly or in synergism with other pests or factors causes pre-mature flower and fruit drop. The evergreen perennial cycle of the neglected cashew trees is identified as the primary source of inocula for the infection of the inflorescence, under the influence of rain showers at flowering stage. Integrated Disease Control Strategy involving use of host resistance from the present elite cashews, sanitation (timely pruning), and chemical control drawn up from the biology of the pathogen and the host will provide the most economical and effective disease control alternative.
