Ad Hoc Constitution of Topical Antibiotics Solution for Ear Dressing as a Necessity: Prelimanary Report

Background/ Purpose: In the management of chronic suppurative otitis media and otitis externa there are few cases where although an organism is cultured and isolated from the ear, there are either no antibiotic sensitive to the microbiological flora or the sensitive antibiotic is not available in the form of an ear drop, limiting the effectiveness of ear dressing. The aim of this article is to describe a simple method of constituting a topical antibiotic solution as a matter of necessity; for daily ear dressing to eliminate ear infections.Methodology: A prospective study was therefore conducted between January, 2009 and December, 2010 in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria, on Ad hoc constitution of antibiotics solution for ear dressing as a necessity. Six (6) ears with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) had ear swabs for microscopy, culture and sensitivity, which revealed organisms that were sensitive to antibiotics, without ear drop preparations were included in the study. Antibiotic powder were appropriately constituted into solutions and used for daily ear dressings.Results: Ad hoc constitution of the antibiotic injection powder as a solution in all cases were used for daily ear dressing with quick elimination of ear infection without untoward effects.Conclusion: Ad hoc constitution of sensitive antibiotic powder as a solution for ear dressing can eradicate ear infections.
