Internet use by students in selected departments of the faculty of agriculture, university of Benin, Benin city, Nigeria

The study investigated the use to which the internet is put by students of the faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. A simple random sampling technique was used in selecting four departments from six departments in the faculty. Data were gathered with the use of a structured questionnaire from a total of 88 randomly selected students. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analysing the data. Results revealed that 59.1% of the respondents were within the ages of 21 to 25 years, majority of whom access the internet from the faculty e-learning centre, with 31.8% accessing it at least twice a week. Furthermore, all the students (100.0%) were aware that the internet may be used for the registration of courses and assignments, while e-mails ( x = 4.32) and chatting ( x = 4.09) are the major activities the students used the internet for. There were no significant associations between the ages, gender, level of study and the use of internet by the students. It was recommended that the potentialbenefits and use to which the internet can be put should be incorporated into the curriculum of computer science courses
