Making group relations theory at home in South Africa

The aim of the research is to facilitate dialogue around the contextualisation of the group relations training model in South Africa in order to assist South Africans to negotiate transformation in this country. The first section of this paper explains the theory of group relations and group relations conferences. This discussion is based on psychoanalytic and group dynamic principles derived from Bion and Klein, and as practised by the Institute for the study of Leadership and Authority in South Africa (ISLA), the Department of Industrial Psychology at UNISA and DCT Consulting. Assumptions (epistemological and ontological) that characterise the theory will be identified. The second section of the paper discusses contributions pertaining to the relevance of the group relations training model for South Africa. Le but de cette recherche est de faciliter le dialogue sur la contextualisation du modèle de formation des relations de groupe en Afrique du Sud, afin d'aider les Sud-Africains à négocier la transformation dans leur pays. La première partie de l'article est consacrée à une explication de la théorie des relations de groupe. Celle-ci se base sur des principes psychoanalytiques et dynamiques de groupe, dérivés de Bion et Klein, et appliqués par ‘I'Institut d'Autorité et de Qualités de Leader en Afrique du Sud (ISLA: ‘Institute for the study of Leadership and Authority in South Africa'). Les hypothèses (épistémologiques et ontologiques) qui caractérisent la théorie seront identifiées. On a envoyé un questionnaire aux membres de la branche Gauteng d'ISLA.
