Normal Haematological Values Of Nigerian Students As Seen In Anambra State

Objective: To determine the normal haematological values of secondary school students. Age range 11 – 22 years. Design: Venous blood samples were collected from students of three secondary schools at Anambra State. Settings: The samples were collected with sterile syringes and needles into haeparinized bottles and processed in the laboratory unit of the department of production Technology (Biotechnology Option) NAU Awka Main Outcome Measure: Determination of the haematological normal values of the following blood parameters; Haemoglobin (Hb), Haematocrit (PCV), Leucocyte count (WBC), and the differential cells count (consisting of Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Lymphocytes and monocytes). Results: Out of the 100 blood samples collected the following ranges were obtained. Males: Hb 9.9 – 16.6g/dl, PVC 33-49%, Total WBC 4.5-10.0x103 cells/mm, Neutrophils 39-64% Lymphocytes 20-76%, Monocytes 0-13%, Eosinophils 0-11% and Basophils 0-1% Female: Hb 8.7-15.0g/dl, PCV 30-47%, Total WBC 3.0-10.8x103 cells/mm, Neutrophils 39-64%, Lymphocytes 20-76%, monocytes 0-13%, Eosinophils 0-14% and Basophils 0-1% Conclusion: Normal haematological Values help to determine the health condition of individuals. Very low values of Hb and PCV results in anaemia while some diseases and infections either reduce WBC drastically or raise it so high.
