In this third and final article on "the micropolitics of university restructuring", the links are drawn between globalization pressures on the third world state and the ways in which higher education institutions are affected in the same ways by the state and globalization, given the very different histories, capacities and ideologies of universities even within the same country. But the case study of the University of Durban Westville (UDW) also demonstrates that the quality of organizational leadership is a critical variable not only in shaping institutional micropolitics but in affecting the capacity of universities to respond to the relentless demands of the state under conditions of globalization.
