Collection Building, A Critical Activity for Librarians and Academic Staff in the Provision of Quality Resources for Teaching and Research in Tertiary institutions

The paper defines tertiary institutions as the highest academic institution in a country which produce scientific and skilled manpower to equip students for greater responsibilities. It states that libraries are established particularly academic libraries exist to collect large record of human knowledge to provide intellectual and physical access to these materials in order to facilitate their academic prowess. It opined that both librarians and academic staff have a role to play in the provision of quality resources for teaching and research. In doing this, community analysis is very crucial in order to know the specific and varied needs of both students and the academic community. The paper concludes that the proliferation of materials both print and electronic calls for critical look in the provision of quality materials for teaching and research, it also states that collaboration between librarians and academic staff in the selection of library materials would ease the work of materials provision to both staff, students and academic communities. It finalizes by stating that community analysis would make this work to be quickly and easily achieved.
