A comparative study of organizational citizenship behaviour in service and manufacturing organizations

This study compares the degree of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB), OCB-Organization (OCB-O) and OCB-Individual (OCB-I) in service and manufacturing organizations. Design of this study was cross-sectional survey and data were collected with a standardized scale that was presented in questionnaire form. With convenience sampling technique, 55 organizations (10 manufacturing, 45 service) were sampled and a total of 448 respondents (251 males, 197 females) provided the data analyzed. Data analysis revealed no significant difference in employees’ performance of OCB, t (df; 53) = 1.40, > .05, two-tailed, Cohen’s d =.38), OCB-O, t (df; 53) = .46, >.05, two-tailed, cohen’s d = 0.12), and t(df; 53 )=.1.56, >.05, two-tailed, cohen’s d=.042) in service and manufacturing organizations. It was concluded that nature of organization activity does not moderate and has trivial effect on performance of OCB. It is recommended that more studies be done on performance of OCB in manufacturing and service organizations and other classifications of organization, such as public versus private-owned organizations and profit versus non-profit organizations.Keywords: organizational citizenship behaviour, OCB-O and OCB-I, service organizations and manufacturing organization
