Manuscript tradition in Africa: The Arabit and Ajam manuscripts at the Institute of African Studies

The survival of Islam depends on the teaching of the sacred writing. The consequence was the invention of another form of writing, known as ajami. Which is a system of transcription of local languages with the adoption of the Arabic letters (al-huruf al-arabiyya). This type of writing allowed the setting down of languages like Hausa, Fulfulde, Dagomba, Wolof, Gonja, Mampurle, and Swahili. The collection of manuscripts of the African Institute Studies of University of Ghana was assembled over a period of several years during the 1950s. Many dedicated scholars were involved in the project. These manuscripts are the witness of the manuscript tradition in Africa.br>La présence islamique en Afrique s\'appuie sur l\'enseignement de l\'écriture sacrée. Elle eut pour conséquence l\'invention d\'autre forme d'écriture, telle que l\'écriture dite « ‘ajmi », produit à partir d'un système de transcription des langues africaines par l'adoption de l'alphabet arabe al-hurûf al-arabiyya. Ce type d\'écriture a permis de fixer des langues vernaculaires jusqu\'alors orales : Haoussa, Fulfuldé, Dagomba, Wolof, Gonja, Mampurlé, et Swahili. Le fonds des manuscrits de l'Institut des Études Africaines de l'Université du Ghana a été constitué dans les années 1950. Plusieurs savants ont participé au projet de collecte de ces manuscrits.
