The Gobi dance suite, a paradigm of acculturation

Dance in Africa continues to play a significant role in the social and religious lives of the people. In Wenchi, the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, the Gobi dance is one of the most popular dance forms. Gobi, performed by two settler groups, the Wangara and Banda, originally from the Ivory Coast, is an example of the role dance plays in uniting the community. Even though the Wangara and Banda see themselves as different ethnic groups, they are united as one through their participation in Gobi. An important feature of Gobi is that the movements that form the form are a combination of Manding, Dyula and Akan movement patterns. This combination in effect, has contributed to the growth and appeal of Gobi. It has also benefited the cultural life of the people of Wenchi.RésuméEn Afrique, la danse joue toujours un rôle important dans la vie sociale et religieuse de ses habitants. A Wenchi, dans la région ghanéenne de Brong Ahafo, la danse Gobi est l\'une des danses les plus populaires. Les Wangara et les Banda, originaires de la Côte d\'Ivoire, sont deux groupes ethniques qui pratiquent la danse Gobi. Ceci montre le rôle que joue la danse dans l\'unification de la communauté. Bien que les Wangara et les Banda se considèrent comme des groupes différents, ils sont unis par leur participation à la danse Gobi. Le trait remarquable de la danse Gobi est que les mouvements qui constituent sa forme sont une combinaison de mouvements des danses également pratiquées par les groupes Manding, Dyula et Akan. Cette combinaison a en effet contribué au développement et au charme de la danse Gobi.
