Words written or spelt with the letter C in English often take different pronunciations, namely [k], [s], [tS], besides others such as [S], [z], [x] and [h]. For example in the word ‘concern’ the initial letter C is pronounced [k] while the second C is articulated as [s]. Again in a word such as ‘church’, the letter C in initial and at penultimate positions respectively is realized as [tS] in both occurrences. The purpose of this article is to research the behavior of these occurrences and to identify on a more consistent basis whether these pronunciations are just another case of arbitrariness in language or are predictable and if predictable, (1) to what extent percentage wise, (2) what rules govern the different predictablearticulations ...
