In Nigeria as in other tropical African countries, the natives use so many herbs, which are traditionally believed to have anti-malarial property. Concoctions prepared from these herbs (either singly or in combination with one another) are swallowed or inhaled to treat malaria. With the introduction of cheap anti-malaria drugs, there was marked reduction in the use of local herbal medicine. Unfortunately, due to the present high level of poverty in the sub-continent and the evolution of resistant strains of Plasmodium parasites to cheap and indiscriminately going back to the barks, roots and leaves of trees/herbs for treatment of illnesses.
