Livestock Grazing Intensities and Soil Deterioration in the Semi-Arid Rangeland of Nigeria: Effects on Soil Chemical Status

This study evaluates the problem of soil deterioration in a semi-arid rangeland in northeastern Nigeria. It compares plots under heavy, moderate and light grazing, with a savanna woodland control plot in order to assess the effects of different grazing intensities on soil chemical status. Long-term heavy grazing by livestock has led to significant decline in total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable calcium and magnesium in the grazed sites compared with the savanna woodland site (P < 0.05) and, an enrichment of available phosphorus and organic carbon in the heavily grazed site, suggesting a marked centripetal transfer of soil nutrients from the moderately grazed site to soils close to the watering points (that is the heavily grazed site) via animal dung. The adoption of soil management techniques to conserve and enhance soil organic matter and nutrients appears crucial to the long-term productivity of the rangelands.
