A total of 43 patients diagnosed as having malaria were admitled to Johannesburg Hospital during 1988; 40 (94%) were infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Only 26 patients (60%) were recorded as having used prophylaxis of any kind; chloroquine alone and in combination was used as prophylaxis by 17:.
