Extended research has established the fact that it is difficult, if not impossible, to conduct a direct acoustic–phonetic comparison between the vowels produced by female and male speakers or groups of speakers. This is due to the effects of physiological and anatomical speaker differences on vowel formants, especially F1 and F2. A variety of computational procedures (or algorithms, methods, techniques) have been developed to allow for the normalisation of formantfrequency measures and to assist in reducing or even eliminating the consequences of speakerspecific variability, without losing information with regards to other important features, such as age and ethnicity.
